My camera isn't working
25/07/23 Filed in: Hardware
Scotty, I am having trouble with the auxiliary camera that I had to begin using after the internal camera on laptop broke.
I have had a weekly Teams meeting the past 2 weeks. In each case, I could not get an option for an auxiliary camera. As a result, whenever I went with the camera “on”, it was dark.
Not sure if is Teams or me. Not sure if Zoom would be an issue but I have not had a Zoom call recently.
___________
First thing to check is to try using the camera with other software than Teams. For example, Zoom of course. You can just open zoom and go to settings to test the camera. FaceTime, or even QuickTime will allow you to record using the camera.
If the camera is unavailable in any of the other applications, it’s the either the camera or a setting related to the camera. But if all those other applications find the camera then it’s Teams. Be sure to quit each application before opening the next. Applications don’t like to share hardware when two are open using the same hardware.
If it's teams, check the following…
If you’re on the latest version of the OS Venture, go to settings, select Privacy and Security and make sure that you’ve allowed access within the camera area.
Why isn't my computer on the internet?
12/07/23 Filed in: dns
The internet is off for one of my computers but the wifi signal looks good. Why am I not on the internet?
__________
In wifi settings, go to Advanced. Find DNS. Remove any DNS numbers and replace them with 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 You should then seen Apply. Let me know if that resolves it.
___________
Any idea what caused the problem?
Should I have seen DNS numbers?
___________
When there are no DNS numbers in settings, that means that the computer is relying on the router to do that work. Sometimes a simple restart will resolve the issue. Restarting sends a request to the router to start taking to the computer again. The numbers I provided above are very useful and generic DNS numbers directly from Google. I often just apply those instead of using the router's (therefore your ISP's DNS numbers.)

Why can't I update my iPad?
10/07/23 Filed in: iOS
Hi Scotty - this is not allowing me to update my iPads because it says it can’t be updated wirelessly. How else would I update an iPad ?
___________
It’s very possible the current iOS version you are on is so behind that it can’t make that far of a jump. The dialog box is telling you you’d need a computer in order to make that large of a jump in operating system. You could either use your Mac or even the windows machine but the windows computer would need to be running iTunes. The Mac no longer requires iTunes to run updates on iPads. It’s done through the finder itself. Obviously the issue with that iMac is the sluggishness of the hard drive. But you could struggle your way through it on the iMac. I’d probably prefer that vs getting involved with iTunes on your windows machine anyway.
You connect the iPad to your computer, open a finder window (by clicking the happy face icon in the dock) then select the iPad on the left column of that window. From there, you’ll see an ability to update the device. That should do it.
