Apple is scanning your Photos library for objects, places and even expressions
I keep getting this message any idea what I should do?

Several months back, Apple implemented additional security protections to the Mac that now require a few more steps for programs like dropbox, zoom, google drive and so on to have access to your computer. Drive file stream is the evolution of Google Drive for business.
Open System Preferences (under the black Apple in the top left corner of your screen)
Go to Security and Privacy
Click the lock in the bottom corner to allow changes to be made in that window.
Find the item in the list to the right and click the box.

If that doesn't work next thing to try:
You may want to try reinstalling The Google Software related to File Stream. Here's how to from Google:
Delete Google Drive for Mac
Important: Before you uninstall Google Drive, close or quit the application.
macOS
If that still doesn't do the trick then you may need to get someone like myself involved to remove files at a more root level that could be causing the issue.
By the way, here's an additional helpful comparison provided by Google explaining the differences between File Stream and their home version "Backup and Sync" which is a terrible rename of "Google Drive". Compare Backup and Sync & Drive File Stream - Google Drive Help

How do I convert a pdf file to a picture?
27/06/19 Filed in: preview
I have a PDF of a schematic that I need to convert to an image for uploading. Is there a simple way of doing that? Also, of making it a photo?
___________
Several ways to accomplish converting a pdf to a jpg or png.
1. Just take a screen shot using command+shift+4 then drag the area you want to select as a screen shot.
This will drop a png file onto your desktop. Keep in mind tis is only for one page at a time.
2. Use preview to export to a jpg. Under file go to Export then select jpg.

Why does my time machine say it hasn't backed up in 56 days?
27/06/19 Filed in: time machine
Hi Scotty I had unplugged the back up drive a while ago for travel and have since plugged it back in. Don’t understand why I’m getting this message?
___________
One possible explanation (and this is Apple's fault for not paying attention to detail) is that when a person uses 2 drives to backup using Time Machine, while one drive is happy and working, when the computer has not seen the other drive, instead of displaying a message that should say "we have not seen your second backup drive in xx days" it says "we have not backed up in xx days." This is confusing because it makes us think no backup has happened.
That is the most common explanation. To see if this may be the case, you can open system preferences, go to Time Machine then see if two drives have been selected as backup drives in the left column.
Another way to see if the drive you actually have plugged in is backing up is to open it in the finder then navigate to backup.backupsdb/your computer name/Macintosh HD/ then you'll see several folders all with dates. The most recent completed backup should be very recently (like within a day or so if your computer has been on and the drive was plugged up).

30" Cinema Display on a Macbook Pro USB-C
27/06/19 Filed in: Hardware
Scotty,
I have tried the Apple mini display port to AVI Adapter and the Apple HDMI to AVI adapter.
Neither of them will give me the max resolution of the 30" Cinema Display. What do you suggest that I use to get the max screen resolution (2560 x 1600)?
___________
After a little more research, connecting that legal 30” display which used DVI to a modern computer using Thunderbolt 3 looks like it may be too long a jump in technology. That’s a shame because the 30” Cinema display was a great screen (although ran very hot and used a lot of energy). I do think it is possible by using an Active dual link DVI adapter in addition to your usb-c to mini display port adapter. I’ve read success stories and failure stories. Here are similar adapters to what you’d be looking for.
Amazon.com: USB C to Mini DisplayPort Adapter, Allsmartlife USB Type C to Mini DisplayPort/Mini DP Adapter Cable with Aluminium Case Support 4K Resolution for Apple New MacBook, ChromeBook Pixel, Alienware- Grey: Computers & Accessories
Monoprice Mini DisplayPort 1.1 + USB to Dual-Link DVI Adapter - Monoprice.com
As they say, you may want to save the receipts. Considering the cost of the 30” display 10 years ago however, it seems reasonable to try to invest a little more money to see if you can get a couple years more out of it.
Disclosure: It is very possible that Apple could send an update out at any time that would accidentally limit the output resolution to that legacy display. This would most likely not be done on purpose but rather: whoever writes the display drivers just might not go back that far when writing support for older displays.
If you were to ask 95% of any Apple Store, considering many of them were probably in pre-K when we were using the 30” cinema display, they’d tell you it’s not possible.

Why can't I log out of my iCloud account on my mac?
___________
This can be a problem for some accounts. Here are a few ideas to try.
1. Be sure that the user you're logged into doesn't have parental controls turned on. To check this, go to system preferences, Users and Groups:

If your user is a standard or parental controlled user, you'll want to log into the Admin user on the machine first, go back to system preferences, give the other user Admin rights using the check boxes in that same window. You may need to click the lock to make changes first. Then return to the other user and try logging out of iCloud again.
2. Second thing to try is to turn off all iCloud services. Uncheck all the boxes then try again.
3. Be sure you are on a healthy wifi network. iCloud services have to talk to the internet in order to log out.

Why is my Orbi router blocking some sites that should be perfectly fine?
Why are some sites getting blocked that are perfectly fine like HBO, ESPN, and Peloton?
___________
I was installing an Orbi system yesterday and noticed a new change in their software that has only shown up in the last week or so. It’s called “Netgear Armor”. It’s basically a security subscription (90 day trial) that Netgear has added to certain lines of it’s routers that is supposed to check for secure websites. The problem is that it’s a little over zealous and is blocking some sites that are totally fine. This could be the issue with your network.
To check to see if Orbi Armor has been activated on your system, you can download the Orbi app, log in to your Netgear account, then go to Wifi settings. I will be turning this feature off in future deployments until I feel it is beneficial.
Netgear Armor is basically a third party service (Bitdefender) that Netgear is hoping people will subscribe to. Netgear will get a cut of the subscription and Bitdefender will get what's left. Side note: I am really sick of everyone moving to the subscription model. Subscribe to Microsoft Office! Subscribe to Youtube Plus! Subscribe to Apple News Plus! Subscribe to Amazon Music Plus! On and on and on… Companies have realized they can make more money if you subscribe to a service rather than buying the software out right. (Thanks App store). This started with mobile apps and now it's bled into almost every piece of software we use. So now our credit card bills are filled with Monthly charges of $.99, $2.99, $10.99, etc…every month.

How can I protect my website from hackers?
_________
Website security is one of the most important things to any business. More and more we are seeing sites being compromised by software that penetrates your files on the server on which your site lives. Bad code can be injected into your site's pages that result in your site disappearing from the web and replaced by someone else's garbage ads or even worse (adult sites in some cases). That can destroy your business within a day. First line of protection:
Get a secure certificate. You'll notice some sites you go to now say "not secure". What this means is that the site's owner has not yet purchases an SSL certificate that ensures information entered on that site is encrypted as it travels through the internet. You can tell if a site is secure by seeing the lock within the url bar. You can also tell by seeing https: instead of http: HTTPS stands for hyper text transfer protocol secure. Sites like Amazon, eBay, NYTimes, even my own site have taken the step to secure their site. Sites such as Charlotte Meck schools have not have not yet taken the step to secure theirs. If you don't see a lock on the site's url or your browser states the "site is not secure", best not to enter information into that site. Eventually browsers will refuse to load webpages that are not https.
Now, just because you are on a https site doesn't mean everything is safe. It is possible to be on a bad guy's site that he has secured. If you mistype a website's name, there are plenty of bad guys out there that have bought the misspelled name and are waiting for you to land there accidentally. They may have even invested a little to secure that site to make you feel more comfortable. Next thing you know, you think you are entering your information in amazon but your are accidentally giving amazan the information. You get the idea.
Next, sign up for a service that checks your site weekly for malicious code. There are several out there that are free and do a great job. I use sucuri.net which comes with my hosting service (godaddy). Here's a list of a few website based tools you can use to check your own site out for malware:
https://www.virustotal.com/
https://aw-snap.info/file-viewer/
https://sucuri.net/malware-detection-scanning/
https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/
Here's what a good report might look like:
If you find that your website has issues you'll want to fix them as fast as possible. A site that contains malicious code for very long will end up getting blacklisted by Google.

Do I need to increase my iCloud storage when first syncing my devices?
When I'm turning on iCloud photo syncing It is saying I have to buy 9.99 in iCloud storage a month to turn photo and iCloud on—is that what I do to make the transfer? I don't think I have that many pictures.
___________
It is very possible that once all of your devices (iMac, laptop, iPhone) start talking to each other through the cloud, iCloud adds up all the pictures and realizes you have more pictures than space. It then recommends you increase your storage space to combine them all. However, I’ve often seen that iCloud is mistaken about the total number of pictures because people sometimes have the same library in two places. In other words, duplicates. The good news is that while iCloud doesn’t know it yet, it will discover the duplicates during syncing and just keep one of them. Most adults in the 35 and over crowd usually have around 100 gigs or more of photos. Younger people have less because they haven’t lived as long. That being said, most people I work with are in the 200 gig $2.99 a month category (including myself). I doubt you actually have over 200 gigs of pictures. What this all means is that you can turn on the recommended storage upgrade (temporarily) while iCloud sorts everything out, then about a week later, downgrade to the 200 gig plan. That’s most likely where you’ll land. If you can’t downgrade in a week, that means you have A LOT of pictures. Most likely not the case.

Why won't my pictures show up on my computer?
Why are none of my pictures from my phone on my computer? All of 2019 will not go to my computer even if I plug it in to computer. It only imported last four pictures
___________
You're using iCloud photo library so plugging in your phone to your computer will not accomplish a picture transfer. Pictures must first move to the cloud FROM the phone then TO the computer. To ensure that you have iCloud photo library turned on on all your devices, check the following settings:
On your computer(s):
system preferences/icloud/Photos make sure iCloud photos is turned on. You can also check this in the Photos app itself by opening Photos then going to preferences within the photos app.
On your phone:
settings/AppleID/icloud/photos make sure iCloud photos is turned on. I also like to keep "photo stream" on as well.
Leave Photos ON on your computer. It takes time to sync the pictures from the cloud to the Mac. If you would like to see the progress you can always visit icloud.com, log into your iCloud account and select photos there. You'll see if your recently taken pictures have made it to the cloud yet. The most common thing that happens is that people don't leave Photos open on their computer for enough time for the pictures to sync.

Connecting a 30" apple cinema display to a Macbook Pro
20/06/19 Filed in: Hardware
Scotty, I have a question. I am trying to connect my mid 2012 Retina MacBook Pro with Mac OS Mojave to my older 30 Apple Cinema Display (Approx 2010). It has four leads on it and an aluminum surround.
I am unable to display the resolution of the screen (2560x1600).
Is it possible to get this resolution from my MacBook Pro and if so, how can it be done?
Thanks
___________
The 30" display was capable of supporting that res and was the optimal res. It could be a limit of the adapter you're using. What adapter are you using?
mini display port to DVI
mini display port to VGA
hdmi to DVI or VGA
USB-C to….
etc…
You can take a pic of the adapter.

HDs not mounting using external enclosure
07/06/19 Filed in: Hardware
Have been trying to read several other hard drives in docking station nothing is showing up on desktop. Have even tried connecting dock to another laptop still nothing. Odd that out of 8 hard drives noting is showing. Is there a place to go on laptop to show that the dock in connected to laptop to make sure it is working?
___________
That is a bit curious that none of your spare HDs are being recognized and that's also a very good troubleshooting step to try a different computer to see if they mount that way as well. I think you mentioned you actually had another external drive enclosure as well so try that next to see if any mount.
One possibility is that all of these were Drobo drives and therefore part of a RAID array. If so, it's likely that just one drive pulled from a RAID would not mount. You can use Disk Utility to see if the drive is at least recognized by the computer even if it doesn't mount.

It would show over on the left column at least partially.
So things to try:
try a different docking station
try a different computer
try a known good drive to prove the docking station works
check disk utility to see if there is evidence of the drive communicating with the computer.
try restarting the computer with a drive mounted to see if it mounts after restart.

Drobo flashing red and green
07/06/19 Filed in: Drobo
Why are all the lights on my Drobo flashing red and green all together?
___________
Just checked Drobo’s website. 4 Bay Drobos that blink red/green all simultaneously means its rebuilding the data and can take several days until it is complete. This makes sense since we added the new healthy 4th drive. So give it some time and the lights should stop blinking after a while. This will not effect your planned data transfer.

Logging in to gmail with multiple accounts
I’m trying to log into my son’s new e-mail address at his new school. I am able to log into it on my I Pad, but not on my desk top. See info below. Did anything we did last Friday affect this? You will see his old CMS google account and his new Trinity google account.
___________
Nothing we did would effect this issue.
1. If his account is not listed, you can go to gmail.com, sign out of any accounts you're currently signed into, then sign in using his new account. Gmail has the ability to maintain many email account sign-ins at the same time. If you don't see his new or old account listed when you go to log in, you'll find a link near where the red arrow pictured below is that allows you to sign in as a different user.
2. Make sure the password for the account you are trying to log in with is correct.
3. You may have been using Chrome and now using Safari. Each browser stores it's own record of what accounts you're logging in with.
4. Keep in mind that emails are not related to each other. Therefore, passwords may not be the same. In other words, a person can have an email account based on trinity and another based on cms.k12, both being hosted by gmail but have different passwords. There would be no relationship between the two.

Dealing with mail prefs is different than it used to be. There's no longer a com.mail.prefs file in the preferences folder of your user library. Now you'll need to look elsewhere. Instead, try moving the following files out of their folders and onto your desktop. Reopen mail and it will rebuild new healthy versions of these files, therefor hopefully solving your mail preferences issue. Restart may be required.
Order of effectiveness
~/user/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
~/user/Library/Containers/com.MailServiceAgent
~/user/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
to get to the user library folder, select Go in the menu and hold down the option key. Remember, always have a good time machine backup before deleting files during troubleshooting.
If you don't understand how to get to the above folder path, you should schedule a session.
