He'll either need to borrow someone's macbook that he could throw the old drive into or invest in an enclosure.

2.5 SATA with firewire for migration at the point of install or he could just use a 2.5 SATA with USB and just use the migration assistant to pull the data over after a generic user has been created.  He'd then go back and delete the temporary user.

The migration assistant will work via firewire in target disk mode, via firewire hard drive at first boot, via USB as a mounted volume at first boot, or via ethernet after the test user has been created.

Here's a list of enclosures that would work.
enclosure to check out

If he wants to save some money he can just get one of the sub $10 enclosures without firewire and just use the migration assistant later or pull the data as a mounted volume.

It's really not that hard.  I'm making it out to be more than it is.
